Drainage

Drainage Solutions – Keeping Your Outdoor Spaces Dry & Functional

At Cornerstone Paving we know that a beautiful patio or driveway isn’t much use if it floods every time it rains. Ireland’s weather can be unforgiving, and standing water quickly causes unsightly puddles, slippery surfaces and even structural damage. Proper drainage isn’t just about dropping a few grates into your paving; it’s about designing a complete system that channels surface and sub‑surface water away from your property. Without this, moisture can erode tarmac, concrete and block paving and may even undermine your home’s foundation

Why proper drainage matters

  • Protect your investment – Excess water wears down tarmac, concrete, block paving and gravel. Installing drains early prevents erosion and cracking.
  • Prevent structural damage – Water that sits around the base of your driveway or patio can weaken foundations and lead to costly repairs.
  • Safeguard your property – Good drainage protects garages and houses from flooding, which is especially important in areas with heavy rainfall.
  • Stop weeds and moss – Pooled water encourages moss and weed growth. Using permeable pavers and drains stops standing water and keeps your outdoor space cleaner.
  • Meet regulations – A well‑designed system ensures compliance with local building regulations and helps you avoid fines for improper water management

Tailored drainage systems for Dublin properties

Every property is unique, which is why we offer a range of drainage solutions:

  • Channel drains – Linear slots that intercept surface water and redirect it away from driveways and patios. Ideal for hard surfaces with a slight fall and capable of handling large volumes of water.
  • French drains – Gravel‑filled trenches with perforated pipes underneath. Perfect for driveways bordering lawns or gardens because they collect water and disperse it to soakaways or planting areas.
  • Permeable paving and block paving – Specially designed paving blocks allow water to filter through tiny voids, reducing runoff and increasing groundwater recharge. Permeable systems are durable enough for driveways and patios but require minimal maintenance.
  • Soakaways and swales – Underground reservoirs or shallow grass ditches that collect and slowly release rainwater back into the soil, helping to prevent pooling on gravel drives

Our drainage installation process

When you choose Cornerstone Paving you benefit from decades of experience. We don’t just fit plastic grates and hope for the best – we design a complete system to suit your property.

After surveying your site, our team installs shallow galvanised or plastic channel drains where water naturally collects. If you prefer an unobtrusive look, we can use slotted channels set into the edge of your patio or driveway.

For heavier flows or problem areas we construct French drains. We dig a trench with a slight fall, line it with gravel, lay a perforated flexible pipe, wrap it in a weed membrane and backfill with more gravel.

Finally we cover the trench with topsoil and reseed it so it disappears into your lawn. This method effectively collects water from the surface and allows it to percolate away, while the membrane keeps debris out of the pipe.

Integrating drainage with paving and landscaping

Drainage doesn’t have to be an afterthought. Our paving, driveway and patio teams work closely with our drainage experts to ensure every project drains properly.

When laying driveways, we incorporate channels and soakaways beneath the surface.

On patios, we may install discreet slot drains at the edges or suggest permeable paving for a seamless look and improved storm‑water management.

We also tie drainage into landscaping features such as flower beds and lawns so excess water nourishes plants rather than causing boggy patches.

Why choose Cornerstone Paving?
