Stonework / Blockwork
Stonework & Blockwork – Crafting Timeless Walls for Irish Gardens
Walls and stonework do much more than mark a boundary; they define spaces, retain soil, provide seating and add character to your garden. Whether you want a rustic stone boundary wall, a contemporary rendered block wall or raised flower beds, Cornerstone Paving brings decades of masonry experience to every project.
Our team builds boundary walls, retaining walls, flower beds, barbecue areas, decorative pillars and wall cappings using natural stone, brick or blocks and we tailor each design to suit your home’s style.
Our stonework and blockwork services
- Boundary walls – Traditional stone or block walls define property lines and offer privacy. We build both mortared walls and drystone walls. In drystone construction, stones are carefully stacked without mortar; a ditch along one or both sides anchors the wall and helps with drainage.
- Retaining walls – Retain soil on sloping sites, create terraces or support raised patios. Drystone retaining walls allow water to drain through gaps in the stones, preventing pressure build‑up and making them easy to repair.
- Raised flower beds & planters – Low walls create attractive planting areas and double as informal seating.
- Barbecue areas & outdoor kitchens – Masonry enclosures for grills and built‑in counters add function and style to your garden.
- Pillars & wall cappings – Decorative pillars frame entrances and support gates, while cappings protect walls and provide a neat finish.
- Plaster & rendering – For a contemporary look we can plaster block walls to achieve a smooth, clean finish.
Types of walls we build
We work with a variety of construction methods to suit your requirements:
- Drystone walls – Built without mortar, these walls rely on carefully chosen stones interlocked by weight and shape. A trench along the wall helps anchor it, prevents base erosion and improves drainage.
- Drystone retaining walls – Designed to hold back soil or create terraces. Gaps between stones allow water to drain naturally, so there’s no pressure build‑up behind the wall. Over time, plants that grow in the joints actually strengthen the structure.
- Freestanding walls – These walls use gravity and the stones’ weight to stand upright. They’re wider at the base and taper towards the top for stability, making them ideal for decorative garden features or to delineate spaces.
- Mortared block walls – Conventional block or brick walls built on reinforced concrete foundations to meet Irish building regulations. These walls can be rendered, clad in natural stone or left exposed depending on the desired finish.
Benefits of natural stone and block walls
Natural stone and well‑constructed blockwork provide numerous advantages:
- Increases property value – Stone walls add refinement and permanence to landscaping projects and are attractive to home buyers.
- Aesthetic and therapeutic benefits – Features such as stone seating walls and raised planters enhance a garden’s beauty and offer a calming, natural ambience.
- Versatility – Stone and block walls can be used for seating, planters, steps and garden features; they can complement existing stone paving or countertops.
- Low maintenance – Once built, walls require minimal upkeep. Capping stones protect the wall and regular cleaning with a suitable stone cleaner is usually all that’s needed.
- Cost‑effective – Combining concrete blocks with natural stone cladding delivers the beauty of stone without the expense of solid slabs.
Materials and finishes
We offer an extensive range of materials and finishes to achieve the look you want:
- Natural stone – Limestone, sandstone, granite and slate each have unique colours and textures. We source from trusted suppliers like Kilsaran and Roadstone to ensure consistent quality.
- Decorative walling ranges – Pre‑manufactured blocks and cladding panels provide a uniform appearance and come in various colours and sizes.
- Brick & render – For a crisp, modern finish we can build block walls and apply a smooth plaster render.
- Stone cladding – Apply thin stone veneers to existing block walls to give a premium stone appearance without the cost of full‑depth stone.
Our process & commitment to quality
Every wall starts with a sound foundation. We pour reinforced concrete footings and install steel reinforcement according to building regulations.
Depending on the wall type, we select stones or blocks, cut and lay them with precise joints, and finish with cappings for protection.
For drystone walls we carefully choose each stone and ensure proper drainage through the base and the wall itself.
Our craftsmanship is second to none and we take pride in creating walls that not only look beautiful but stand the test of time.
